We are seeking an entry level transportation worker to join Nash County’s highway maintenance team.
In this role, you will learn to:
- Uses standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles and heavy machinery in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of roads and roadside facilities on the North Carolina highway and road system.
- Conducts inspections, ensures safety of work areas, and participates in snow and ice removal.
- Perform flagging and assist in completing maintenance/repair projects using tools and equipment such as tractors with attachments, curb machines, cut-off saws, dump trucks, small wheel and sheepsfoot rollers, vibratory roller compactors, grinding mixers and pneumatic tire rollers.
- Work with the painting team.
- Install road signs.
- Assists electronic technicians in maintaining and installing signals.
- Operate hand tools, dump trucks, broom tractors, paint line removal machines, thermoplastic machines, trenching machines and edge line paint guns for sign installation and replacement.
- Performs vegetation management, debris removal, and snow removal.
- Operate tractors with attachments, mowers and dump/flatbed trucks.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of lawns and wildflowers.
- Assist with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication and concrete work.
What to bring
- You are interested in a career in the transportation construction industry and are committed to a safe work environment.
- Experience operating power tools such as chainsaws, weed whackers, skill saws, drills, compactors, and jackhammers, as well as manual labor.
- Commercial driver’s license.If you don’t have this, it still applies: You will have 360 days from your start date to complete our on-the-job training program.
Note
- You will work in severe weather conditions, including snow, ice, tornadoes, and hurricanes, which may require extended work hours each day and/or work on weekends and holidays.
- At highway construction sites, in addition to the dangers of heavy machinery and highway traffic, workers also work outdoors in harsh environmental conditions.
- Pre-employment drug testing is required and we will check with previous employers within the past three years for controlled drug and alcohol testing.
- Wearing safety shoes is mandatory.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED diploma
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
