Accepting the highs and lowest prices of running a small service business
Low price: Territory related
Emotional load:
When you own a business, you carry weight. All customer problems, it will land on your shoulder for every set fold. But what I’ve learned is that when you care, it’s sometimes supposed to get heavy. That means you’re doing it right. If it was so easy… you know, “Everyone would do that.” These are just some of the challenges of the real service business that don’t always reach the surface.Relationship tension:
Businesses needed caution, so I forgot my birthday, holidays, family dinner and anniversary. It’s a huge trade. We fight for the work-life balance of small businesses, but we are re-routed on the way home due to the traffic and deadlines we demand from our businesses.
I’ve learned to be more intentional about finding balance, but it’s still a daily practice weekly, sometimes quarterly.
Economic uncertainty:
The service business has its ups and downs, and the stress goes beyond the office. It continues to your home, affects your sleep and can even challenge the strongest relationship.
Balanced act: First, always
Celebrating each other:
This year, I remembered that the people around us are everything. My parents’ 60 years of milestones, decades of deep friendship, and the loyalty of my own team (which is one of our core values) have shown me that love and support are the true cornerstones of lasting success.Communication and Connection:
Whether it’s a client, a friend or a team member, communication is important. Let people know that they are important. It will become transparent. Please listen more. Ask them or their family how they do it. That makes a difference.Creating a room for life:
Work can be taken over, but we can choose to create space for those who give joy, rest, meaning in our lives. That’s where real success is. It just requires patience.
29 years later, I know a lot of this. Running a small service business is built on human connections. To clients who trust you, employees who show up for you, to friends and family who believe in you even when you’re tired. It was shared after a long week, a hug after a big victory, and a laughter between them.
This business wasn’t just about services that were not always about people. I would not have won it ever without them and I have that appreciation every day.
In the next chapter, next year’s Big 30 is said to be for small businesses with a big reputation for caring with heart, and with the most important people.
Regarding staffing, we help Calgary companies write posts that connect to each other, so they can hire them with their hearts and purpose.
