Challenge
We are seeking an experienced Hydraulic Engineer to join our Eastern Division support team providing technical expertise, guidance, design and quality assurance to manage stormwater, river and coastal impacts in and around roadways to protect the public, the environment and NCDOT assets at every stage of transportation projects.
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
- You will work on our hydraulic engineering team to develop and support Hydrologic and Hydraulic (H&H) studies for NCDOT transportation facilities, including hydraulic planning reports, drainage studies, final hydraulic design, stream modeling, bridge and culvert hydraulic reports, stormwater management plans, and floodplain compliance reports.
- Performs H&H storm response and recovery, watershed modeling, advanced H&H modeling and design, and design of stormwater control measures.
- Develop H&H best practices, digital CAD models, and stormwater management best practices.
- Participates in field investigations, research and development, and training.
- Performs field work requiring climbing steep terrain, moving through dense undergrowth and working in adverse weather conditions.
What to bring
- Knowledge of hydrological/hydraulic design practices and river modeling relevant to transportation facilities.
- Knowledge of FEMA, FHWA and AASHTO stormwater regulations and hydraulic design guidance.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office, hydraulic modeling software, web-based GIS applications, MicroStation, and PDF viewer/editor.
- Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles to common design situations and make appropriate recommendations/decisions using guidelines, performance metrics, and sound engineering judgment.
- Experience implementing activities to achieve project goals while ensuring quality and compliance.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a group with some degree of supervision.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of hydraulic/hydrological concepts, practices and theories and the ability to use them in practice.
- Ability to provide consultation to clients and other stakeholders related to specific programs/projects.
- Ability to develop and/or produce information products, manage program/project plans, and develop and execute short-term strategies.
Note
- Occasionally overnight trips are required.
- Registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Engineers and Surveyors Examinations may be required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience, or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
