In today’s episode, we explore the jobs that are in high demand in the job market as we head into mid-2023. I can’t believe it’s already halfway through the year. Time passes quickly, especially as you get older. But let’s dive into the exciting world of employment and job opportunities.
Before we begin, I would like to let you know that comments and questions are always welcome. Whether it’s related to today’s topic or any other career-related concern, feel free to share it in the comments section below. I would be happy to feature it in this episode.
To gather some insight for today’s discussion, I decided to look beyond my own intuition. I reached out to professionals such as hiring authorities and executive recruiters not only in Canada but around the world. Their opinions add valuable perspective to the information I collect from my clients and networks. The research was extensive and the consensus among experts was interesting.
Let’s start with the important points. Recruitment and adoption is currently peaking, at least from my experience and the feedback I’ve received. This is true all over the world, regardless of location or industry. So while you’re looking at specific positions, keep in mind that there’s a lot of hiring activity overall. Whether you’re looking for a job, looking to advance, expand, or move into another industry, the current hiring landscape offers plenty of opportunities. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the job market and pursue your career goals.
However, it’s important to note that as you climb the corporate ladder, competition intensifies. So, to maximize your chances, you need to have a dynamic LinkedIn profile and a strong, performance-driven resume or CV. Take the time to fine-tune your marketing materials before you start your job search. Make a lasting impression that will wow potential employers. If you have any questions or need guidance in this area, feel free to ask in the comments section. We’ll talk about them as we progress through today’s 2:00 Tuesday episode.
Let’s dig into the features that are in high demand right now. Please note that the list below is not exhaustive and may vary based on geographic factors. However, my research and discussions have shown that these sectors are constantly emerging as hot areas for hiring.
1. Information Technology (IT): From the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to senior managers in various IT and field support departments, IT roles are in high demand. Despite recent layoffs at prominent IT companies such as Google, the IT sector as a whole continues to be a vibrant source of job opportunities.
2. Supply Chain: Supply chain management continues to face challenges around the world, made worse by recent disruptions caused by events like COVID-19. As a result, supply chain professionals, including senior managers, are in high demand to manage ongoing complexity and ensure efficient operations.
3. Sales: Sales jobs are always in demand, regardless of the economy. A strong sales team is essential for a company to be profitable and grow, especially during difficult times. Whether for business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), or other sales positions, the sector consistently offers strong employment prospects.
4. Procurement: As the importance of procurement becomes more apparent, the demand for procurement professionals is skyrocketing. I recently worked with some of the leaders in this space, including Chief Procurement Officers, Vice Presidents and Directors, and had multiple interviews with them. Procurement is a specialized function with great potential.
5. Operation: Corporate operations play an important role in maintaining and streamlining an organization’s infrastructure. Professionals with operational management expertise and a range of support functions are highly valued in today’s job market.
6. Marketing: The marketing environment offers a wealth of opportunities for senior management, including traditional and experiential marketing roles. In fact, I’ve seen Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) in both the U.S. and U.K. pay well and get multiple job offers. The Canadian Senior Vice President of Marketing has experienced similar success. Marketing jobs continue to be in demand.
7. Finance: Finance has traditionally been viewed as a non-revenue-generating function, but there is currently a shortage of qualified financial professionals. Great finance talent is in high demand and the finance role is high on the hiring priority list.
8. Personnel: Human resources (HR) functions also fall into the non-revenue-generating category, so demand fluctuates just like finance. However, recent changes in HR roles and responsibilities have sparked renewed interest in this area. HR professionals are actively recruited, albeit slightly less than in other departments.
In summary, the most in-demand functions today are IT, Supply Chain, Sales, Procurement, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Human Resources. Please note that these rankings are not static and may vary depending on factors such as geography and industry. However, it does provide a general understanding of the current hiring landscape.
Before concluding, let me stress the importance of the network. Job sites and executive recruiters have their roles, but most opportunities are found through networking. Never underestimate your power to make meaningful connections within your industry. Even in today’s job market, networking greatly increases your chances of getting the position you want.
