Challenge
We are seeking an entry-level Field Data Acquisition Engineer to join our Materials and Testing (M&T) team.
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
- Assists state data collection and survey engineers with day-to-day data collection needs.
- Performs research work in the field and in the lab to gather data, information and records on new products.
- Evaluate products to identify causes of poorly performing materials or manufactured products that do not function as designed.
- Conducts research, analyzes collected data, information and test results, and reports findings and conclusions.
- Assists with monitoring and performance evaluation of new/modified manufactured products and construction materials under evaluation and implementation of new/modified procedures/specifications in the field and laboratory.
- Assists State Data Collection and Survey Engineers in the operation of inspection equipment assigned to the Materials and Testing Unit including but not limited to Shaft Inspection Equipment Video Inspection Systems, Pipe Rover Video Inspection Systems, Concrete Core Drills and other hand held equipment.
- Assists the Section by staying current with the latest technology in data collection devices and new technologies developed in the industry.
What to bring
- Experience with computer software (spreadsheets, databases, word processors).
- Demonstrated ability to prepare reports/letters and keep accurate records.
- Knowledge of electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated experience with transportation construction and maintenance procedures.
Education and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering, or
- Equivalent combination of training and experience.
Note
- Registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Engineers and Surveyors Examinations may be required.

We establish acceptance standards for materials and manufactured products that are incorporated into the NC Highway System to ensure that these materials and manufactured products meet our high standards and perform as intended.
Our M&T Data Collection and Investigations team provides quality assurance for a variety of new materials and products being installed on highway construction projects, and also provides investigation services to NCDOT if there are issues with materials on a project. Data Collection and Investigations Section Research assists NCDOT’s maintenance, construction, and other divisions in sharing responsibility for monitoring pavements, performing destructive and non-destructive testing of pavements and underground pipes and boxes, and other data collection activities along the NC highway network.
