The Hancock County Engineer’s Office in Findlay, Ohio is seeking a full-time Bridge and Construction Engineer/Engineer-in-training. This position performs specialized engineering work, including both field and office procedures, on a variety of county and township road, bridge, and drainage projects. Under the general supervision of the County Engineer, this position is required to design and coordinate related construction projects. We provide engineering expertise to prepare specifications, plans, contracts, estimates, and reports related to these projects for your staff to process. Review work in progress and work completed. Review and inspect work performed under contract to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Performs calculations and drafting tasks related to field investigation records, traverses, and closures and related to reductions. Prepare complex maps. This position supervises and directs staff. Answer inquiries and questions from engineers, developers, surveyors, county staff, and the public regarding department operations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Have or have the ability to obtain PE and PS registration. Have or have the ability to obtain an NBIS Level 2 bridge inspector. County Engineer’s Office experience or equivalent training and experience preferred. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite or similar software, computer-aided design (CAD) and other design, data recording and analysis software. Must be able to work on-call after hours and travel to various project sites. Work in all environmental conditions. Access and navigate job sites. Climb the ladder up to 20 feet. Essential Duties Typical duties include, but are not limited to: Design and develop plans for roads, bridges, culverts, ditches, and drainage structures. Create relevant designs, specifications, and quotations. Calculates and estimates remediation costs, project costs, and develops economical alternatives. Possesses knowledge and ability to use skilled drafting equipment and techniques. Uniquely apply your knowledge and skills to write contracts. Create engineering drawings, including drawing and updating maps. Complete site investigation. Inspects projects under construction for compliance with plans, specifications, occupational safety requirements, and workmanship. Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to successfully complete tasks. Serves as the bridge quality assurance/quality control coordinator. Whether we design bridge projects, prepare and supervise bridge construction schedules, inspect (including destructive criticality testing) and repairs, whether completed in-house or contracted through consultants, we ensure that they comply with NBIS 23 metrics. Make sure it gets completed. We use our expert knowledge of road establishment and public land laws to design structural plans, coordinate changes, and provide guidance throughout the construction process. Estimate bridge traffic loads and ground strength. Troubleshoot issues and resolve issues between parties. Work with construction managers, inspectors, local officials, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects meet all safety and government standards in design, including materials and structural elements used, while meeting deadlines and budgets. Assist and supervise gutter maintenance including spraying, mowing, sandbar removal, tile repair, and other necessary tasks. Research legal and property records to determine land parcel ownership, recent changes in real estate ownership, description and size of real estate parcels, maintain technical records, prepare operating reports, and real estate ownership Determine the evaluation for the person. Maintain contact and interact with your organization’s employees, county agencies, utility companies, contractors, and the public to respond to routine inquiries or respond to inquiries in writing in a prompt and friendly manner. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Must be licensed or able to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license. You must obtain the license within the specified period. Must have or be able to obtain a Professional Surveyor (PS) license. You must obtain the license within the specified period. NBIS Level 2 Bridge Inspector Certification or eligible for certification. Certification must be obtained within a specified period. Familiar with Microsoft Office suite or similar software, computer-aided design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analysis software.
