Job Description: The City of Spokane Valley is seeking a highly talented and enthusiastic employee to serve the City as a Full-time Engineering Technician I in the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate will support the City by performing duties related to capital improvement projects and will have excellent technical skills and a strong desire to provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
Example of Job Duties: Under the supervision of the Engineering Technician Supervisor, performs routine and complex technical engineering related tasks for roads, storm water, parks, utilities and other public works projects and programs. Assists engineers in assessing site conditions and preparing reports, cost estimates, construction plans, specifications and construction inspections. Consults with engineers to identify project parameters, standards and specifications.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: High school graduation or General Education Certificate (GED) plus two years of relevant technical or college training in drafting, computer-aided design (CAD), engineering technology, civil engineering or related field, and a minimum of two years related work experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as they apply to local government; knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting the Division’s activities; and considerable skill in performing cost estimates for complex projects. Experience and proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D, MS Word, MS Excel, Bluebeam, and basic surveying skills are an advantage. Ability to create, organize, and maintain engineering field and office data, reports, and systems. Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information orally and in writing to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other government agency representatives, City officials, and the general public. Experience designing public works projects is strongly desired. Construction inspection experience is also preferred. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work well both independently and in a team.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to employment and physical ability to navigate the construction site. Passing a background investigation, including a criminal history check, is a requirement of employment with the City of Spokane Valley.
Salary: Full salary range is $31.45 to $48.79 per hour for Grade 14. This is an FLSA non-exempt position in the Engineering department.
Benefits: Health insurance is provided through the Washington Municipal Association Employee Benefits Trust. The City currently offers medical, dental, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, vision insurance, and employee assistance insurance. 11 paid holidays, vacation, sick days, and other paid time off are provided. The City’s mandatory retirement plan is the Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which requires employee contributions. The City does not participate in the Social Security system; however, the City has adopted the ICMA-RC 401(A) Social Security Replacement Plan, which has contribution rates the same as FICA.
