Important job description
The Next Engineer II/Senior Engineer serves as a project manager for multidisciplinary projects of varying complexity, type and scope, designed by in-house staff or consultants, providing overall coordination and assistance in oversight. Project responsibilities include transportation (new roads, road widening, pedestrians, pedestrian/traffic lights, cycle paths, etc.). May include sanitary installations, stormwater systems, water transport/distribution systems and related facilities. and other city projects to ensure execution within defined objectives, priorities, budgets and deadlines. Attend construction meetings and review contracts. Create project scope, cost estimates, biddable plans and specifications, and schedules for urban projects.
Successful incumbents assist with difficult issues such as power utility conflict resolution and relocation. Perform general civil engineering design and prepare feasibility studies, reports and construction drawings using engineering software suitable for use in soliciting bids for public improvement projects including, but not limited to, roads, sidewalks, water, sanitation, stormwater distribution and transportation systems. Knowledge of grading, roads, utilities, BMP/SWM, erosion and sediment management design, deed survey, construction planning, plat preparation (used to obtain right of way and easements), preparation of tender documents, construction management (problem solving at construction stage). Evaluate and evaluate the impact of public and private infrastructure design related to drainage and stormwater runoff, including hydrology and hydraulics in relation to city and state regulations. Assist with drilling permit review and inspection, CAD support as needed.
Provide project quality control of consultant design and construction documentation. We review plans submitted by consulting engineering firms for city projects to determine whether they meet design requirements, cost and compatibility with city standards, guidelines and operational needs. Assisting in the development of Capital Improvement Project (CIP) programs and construction management of various projects.
Provides technical guidance and support to other intergovernmental departments in the city. It is recommended to revise the design and construction standards manual and related documents. Provides technical answers to questions posed by developers, civil engineers, contractors, residents and others across jurisdictions.
Assist engineering staff in performing civil engineering reviews of all site development plans to ensure compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, regulations and standards. It evaluates a variety of factors such as public infrastructure construction and installation, transportation and transportation, drainage and stormwater runoff, hydrology and hydraulics, flood control, topography and sabo, zoning and land use, water and sewage adequacy, and related issues to assess the impact of proposed projects. Approve plans and issue permits or initiate necessary actions to correct deviations or violations. Work with the developer/engineer to change the plan to fit.

Minimum qualifications
Engineer II
A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering is required. Preferably complemented by his 3 years of civil engineering experience in transportation, stormwater treatment or public works. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position. Engineering in Training (EIT) certification is required.
senior engineer
Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university in engineering and 5 years of relevant experience with progressive responsibility. Or a combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Must own and maintain a Professional Engineer in Virginia.

A valid Virginia driver’s license and license.
