Surviving the pandemic has also inspired many to look back on their careers. While vacations are usually the time people think about career growth and possible career changes, I’ve noticed that the pandemic has affected many people in the same way.
For example, working independently from home has allowed people to focus solely on their actual work in ways that have never been possible before. It removed all the distractions that come with work: meetings with customers, conversations with colleagues, office politics. The absence of this dynamic has made some people think more about what they actually do for a living and whether it makes sense to them.
Many people find themselves unsatisfied with their careers and are considering changing jobs.
But it is also a difficult time to think about change. With so much uncertainty, does it make sense to change careers or look for a new job now?
The pandemic is certainly a difficult time, but it is still possible to explore new options and consider what you want to do.
Start with these 3 steps (If you’re interested in a more detailed explanation of this topic, see my full article: How to Change Your Career.
- Evaluate where you stand, both personally and financially. Needless to say, changing careers or jobs is a big deal. Think about how much time and money you are willing to invest in this career change.
- Introspection – Think about your values, interests, and preferences in terms of your work environment/work-life balance. What is important to you in these areas? How does your current role fit in? How important is it for you to improve?
- Start planning. Start looking for opportunities that might interest you. Find out what these roles entail and what it takes to transition into them. Depending on what you’re doing, it might be easier than you think. Either way, it makes sense to understand what’s really involved so you can make decisions based on your values, interests, and personal circumstances.
On the other hand, here are three reasons why now is a good time to think about change.
- There is a good chance you have time now. Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus, it is thought that there have been more opportunities to consider employment or career change. That means more time to work on that change. Isn’t the biggest reason why you can’t find a new job or what you want to do is “I don’t have time”? This means that networking is also easier. When you work from home, you have more flexibility to set up meetings with your contacts or attend interviews without having to make excuses to leave work early.
- It could give you a competitive advantage because others might not be looking for it right now. While the pandemic has devastated some industries, opportunities remain in others, such as technology and healthcare. Many of those laid off are not currently looking for work as they are waiting for the pandemic to subside first. And think of it this way. When people are terrified (as they are now), they are unlikely to explore the unknown…that includes new job opportunities. People find comfort in the familiar or the “known,” even if they are not happy. But if you want to embrace the unknown now, who knows. New possibilities may open up and be discovered.
- Remember – no rush. You don’t have to change everything today. You can start small with research, planning, and introspection. This decision will not come in one day for him, but that’s okay. As I said earlier, you may have more time to work on this now, so take advantage of it. You may also feel like your thinking has become clearer when you’re working from home. You may feel that you have enough “distance” to start exploring new opportunities.
It’s always a great time to start thinking about what you want to do with your career. With this pandemic impacting so much of every aspect of our lives, it’s only natural that it can affect our career outlook. If you realize that your job may not be for you, why not take a step today and start the process of finding your dream career?
